Our Sustainability Strategy & Organization

Superior Industries is committed to environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and good governance practices. This commitment enables us to serve the needs of our customers, employees, and communities while building long-term value in our organization and addressing the interests of our investors in Southfield, MI, and beyond. Our commitment is reflected in Superior's company values of integrity, teamwork, customer focus, continuous improvement, diversity, and inclusion. We implement these values on an operational level.

Our sustainability program is centralized under Superior's Health, Safety, Environment, and Energy Department. We ensure that our employees regard environmental stewardship as an essential objective of Superior Industries and that they have specific roles and responsibilities in this regard. Our Environmental Management Systems guarantee the organization's commitment to continuous improvement, pollution prevention, and compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local environmental regulations, certifications, and standards.

Our Supply Chain

Social & Ecological Requirements for Our Suppliers

At Superior, we firmly believe that collaborating with our supply chain is crucial to drive innovation and achieve significant progress in reducing our environmental footprint. To achieve this goal, we closely collaborate with our aluminum suppliers to ensure their products and processes are environmentally sustainable while complying with all applicable laws. At every stage of the product life cycle, we expect suppliers to:

  • Conserve natural resources
  • Responsibly handle chemicals
  • Recycle all materials
  • Have an environmental management system meeting ISO 14001 or EMAS requirements
  • Complete Superior's corporate sustainability self-assessment
  • Acknowledge agreement with Superior's code of conduct

Superior works closely with suppliers to track the status of all required certifications and agreements. We may request audits of this system at any time.

Production Today

A Sustainable Approach

To meet current and future requirements, Superior is focused on developing products that reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions through improved aerodynamics and lightweighting. In 2021, we determined the carbon footprint for our global operations. These assessments help us identify opportunities to enhance material procurement, optimize production processes, conserve energy, and decrease emissions.

Superior's carbon footprint analysis has also provided a foundation for identifying and prioritizing opportunities to reduce emissions. Since aluminum is the primary material used in our products, changes to our sourcing strategy have had an impact. We are proud to say that our emissions from aluminum purchases are below the current industry standard.

Our aluminum strategy focuses on suppliers powered by green electricity that produce lower emissions than industry standards. As a result, over 75% of the aluminum we purchased in 2022 was from locations powered by a green electricity source. We also source post-consumer recycled aluminum, which helps to reduce our impact on the environment.

Our Sustainability Reports

At Superior, we believe in providing transparent information about our corporate social responsibility practices. We demonstrate this through our participation in programs like the UN Global Compact and CDP reporting. In connection with our involvement in the UN Global Compact, we published a sustainability report for our European operations in 2020 and a global sustainability report in 2021. You can review these reports and others below.
